Press Release:
Colin Smiths mother calls him Randy Newmans bastard son. His undeniable melodies support his clever lyrics and hilarious themes, whether writing pop songs, musical theatre scores, or producing hip hop. Hip hop? you might ask. Whats this skinny white boy got to do with hip hop? Well Colin, also known as Smitty, is half of the production dou, DJ Cappel & Smitty who created "Blue Eyes Meets Bed-Stuy"...a mash up of Biggie and Frank Sinatra which received critical acclaim in 2005 and has been called an underground classic. But that is only part of this new artists story. Colin began piano lessons at age 5, and though he loved music and played in many bands and concerts throughout high school, he decided to study biology when he went to SUNY Binghamton. "I wanted to be a regular guy" recalls Colin, with a hint of sadness "and I didnt think I could make a living as a musician." Colin went on to do research work for Cornell University and in 2001 moved to LA where he got a job at a radioactive production laboratory. "We basically packaged radioactive samples, and my job title was 'Homer Simpson. I walked around and made sure no one was taking radiation home with them, and my department handled all the waste, so me and my boss stuffed bags of radioactive garbage into big barrels, and stored them in a lead lined room. We had to wear badges which indicated how much radiation we had gotten 'beamed' with, and if they went too high, we were taken out of the lab and sent to the hospital. My mom made me watch 'Silkwood' before I started." It was while stuffing bags of radiation into barrels in a windowless room that Colin had the realization that he was missing his true calling. I got laid off as soon as I couldhe laughs and began my new life. Today Colin resides in Brooklyn. He has been mentioned in publications from Rolling Stone to Newsweek to The Source for his work on Blue Eyes Meets Bed-Stuy.He has developed his singing and songwriting style into a unique blend of pop, cabaret, and comedy, which has captivated audiences across the country.
