Biography: When Albany, New Yorker, Rick Lipe first picked up a guitar at a friend's house in high school, within minutes he had nailed the theme to Peter Gunn. Soon afterwards he bought an archtop Harmony from his uncle and began a lifelong love affair with music - both listening and playing. "It's like having a friend that you can hook up with at any time. I've always loved music." Lipe played in numerous bands during college, but unlike so many guitarists who eventually put aside their instruments, he's never stopped playing. "I'll probably be playing for the rest of my life." Several years ago friends began to encourage Rick to record some of his wealth of material. A fellow musician suggested he contact producer Tony Perrino (Buck Dharma, Dan Toler) who owned a studio nearby. The pairing resulted in his debut solo CD Unusual Way, featuring everything from the jangly Telecaster licks, rumbling barroom vocals, and clever lyrics of blues rocker "Can't Get it Right," to the bossa nova rhythm and jazzy picking of the instrumental "Night Breeze." Perrino not only produced the album but contributed organ, piano, bass, cello, and percussion. Additional guitar work on the record was performed by Mike McMann and Joe Mele. Lipe continues to perform regularly, both solo and as part of a duo called The Hot Wires, at Albany and Upstate bars, restaurants, and private parties. Live sets include original material -songs from Unusual Way - as well as a wide range of covers from the fingerpicking blues of Reverend Gary Davis to Elvis, Richard Thompson, Howlin' Wolf, The Beatles, Kingston Trio and J.J.Cale. Like that old archtop Harmony he still uses to play slide, Rick Lipe shows no signs of retiring. "Playing guitar is part of me, it's something that I've always done. If I have nothing to do, I can always play guitar!"
